Copyright in the Technology-Rich Educational Environment: Making sense of the TEACH Act
Can I put commercial video clips on my faculty website? Can I load the textbook CD-rom into WebStudy? Can I copy and paste whole journal articles I want my class to read onto my WebStudy page? What happens if I unknowingly break the copyright law? If you are teaching with online technology, whether face to face or a distance learning class, this workshop is for you. With the implementation of the Technology Education and Copyright Harmonization (TEACH) Act in 2002, many of the barriers to using copyrighted material in an online educational environment were removed. However, there are still some restrictions and the TEACH Act is often difficult to decipher. This workshop will address the new guidelines for “fair use” by translating the important changes into practical terms, and review what you can and can’t do with copyrighted material in the online educational environment.

Active Learning
This workshop will focus on ways to involve students more in your lessons. Research on active learning will be reviewed, and examples of how to involve students more in their own learning will be demonstrated. Participants will leave the workshop with at least 10 ways to make learning more active. Bring one good idea that you have tried in your class and the instructor will copy the ideas and make them available to all participants.

Integrated Course Design
This workshop is based on L. Dee Fink’s book Creating Significant Learning Experiences, a learning-centered approach to instructional design. The book walks readers through a 12-step process that results in an integrated course with an emphasis on meaningful learning. By working through the first steps of the process, workshop participants will have an opportunity to explore this approach to course design and possibly make changes in their own classrooms.

Mixed Age Classroom
Even though the median age of DCCC students is 22, the College attracts many returning adults who seem to present unique challenges in the classroom. Learn how to turn these challenges into opportunities in this session. Participants will gain a basic understanding of adult learning theory, insight into the motivation of adult learners, and some practical classroom strategies to enhance the experience of all students.
